Catching Up With The Lab
Any Melburnian will be well aware that last night was definitely a night better spent indoors, say, guzzling warm chocolate pudding and sipping percolated coffee from a generously proportioned mug (thanks jfox!). However, upon hearing of the well-endowed Mrs Parma’s – a restaurant that almost exclusively serves the humble parma – and in many different variations, we decided to venture out into town and brave the fog, to see what all the fuss was about.

As someone who hasn’t spent a Friday evening in the city for a while, I was faintly conscious of the suits and workmate gatherings among us. Then again, I was tagging along to one of those groups anyway. After some beer tasting (thanks to the generous guidance – and samples – from the guy pouring the drinks), we settled on our beverages and decided to go halves on the Matriciana, which included the addition of bacon, chilli and olives. As it turned out, it was just as well we went halves.…

This sure was filling, and went down beautifully with the thick-cut chips and salad (even though the salad was a bit lonely and neglected in the middle of the table, what with all the other carnivorous offerings among us). The only thing I struggled with was locating the chilli in our dish – it could have done with a bit more. The zap of the chilli is what really makes the Matriciana, whether it’s on pasta or the humble chicken.
All up though, I'd say that sampling beer, parma and chips on an otherwise bleak Friday night was definitely a nice way to finish the working week.

ohp, i forgot to warn you abt my penchant for megarous cups for cawfee! hope you didn't feel overcaffeinated ;p
the matriciana def needed more zing or bite. and how dodge is the mrs parmas sign?
kool pics of the eerrry fog too!!
elmo says> thanks for helping out with my megarous parma. good to have another stomach at the table. hope you liked the beer!
whoa! kindly mrs parma on second glance is less mrs doubtfire and more hooters-styled wench. who knew?
Do you remember which beers you sampled? I just googled the restaurant... A cauliflower parma? There you go, I didn't think that existed! Recommended place to go yossarian?
thanks for dropping by, folks!
jfox - nope, no danger of me getting overcaffeinated. i have a one-cup percolator so because of the smaller volume, i'm used to drinking mine out of a teacup. it's therefore a treat to get a whole mug ;p
serenity - yeah, i agree with the hooters analogy. saucy wench indeed!
jonno - hmm, the beer we settled on was the cloudy ale (i think), and we tried two others. i can't remember their names, but one was quite heavy, with a honey flavour, and the other one was too light for our liking. jfox will probably remember. another one i had a sip of was the raspberry ale - tastes deceptively like soft drink! and yeah, i'd recommend it - good bar service (from our experience anyway) and very generous servings ... maybe you should try that cauliflower parma??
for those interested, the beer tasting report>
* Grand Ridge Brewers Pilsner, a very light pale ale (dr b and i found this one too light);
* then the Stormy Cloudy Ale, a nice crisp beer with orange/citrus aftertaste;
* Gippsland Gold, honey taste, quite sweet (too sweet?)
We ended up choosing the Cloudy Ale with our parma.
They also have Red Hill Scotch Ale on tap from Red Hill Brewery, noice!
