One For The Road
Occasions like weddings, birthdays and New Year's Eve always provide plenty of fodder for some self-indulgent navel gazing. Then again, for those of us who lovingly maintain their blog, who needs an occasion? It's hard to believe that ten years ago we were bringing in the much-hyped new millenium. Looking back, it was probably the most enjoyable New Year's Eve I've had - a small bunch of us gathered at a friends' place for a barbecue, while looking out over the hill at the fireworks from the city. The wall clock at my friend's was out of sync with what was on the TV so we actually missed the countdown. Ten years later, we've all gone our separate ways. I tend to agree with HEL's summary of the last ten years, in that it's been an ugly decade - on a global and less global scale.
Change has gotten no easier to deal with, describing an immature male as a man-child still sounds better than calling an immature female a woman-child, and repeating the same mistakes is still easier than doing the right thing. Indulging and excusing bad habits continues to be easier than breaking them, even if it makes things more difficult in the long run, and dwelling (and whining) about what one doesn't have is still more convenient than showing some gratitude for what one does have.
Here's to good things happening to good people for a change, good health, more perspective, less grudges, more peace, and maybe even breaking some sh**ty habits in the new year. A happy, prosperous and healthy new year to everyone out there. Stay safe in these heady times.

As always well put Yossarian.
It's hard to believe another decade has come and gone, a biggie for us in the transition from being a student to working full time and the changes and lessons that come with it. Some have scarred us, others we look back on with nostalgia but I guess we've been lucky in this sense as all these experiences have made us who we are-for better or worse?! Still trying to figure that out!
Agree it's easier to complain because we forget how fortunate we really are. Perspective (or being hit over the head!) definitely helps us appreciate what we've got!
Hope you're well and look forward to seeing you in the New Year!
Nicely put yossarian. You've been very good at maintaining your blog and it's been great reading your stories, gig reviews and holidays. It's a real shame about friends moving separate ways (doesn't 10 years fly?), but it's just an unfortunate fact that it happens to everyone. That will have to be something I have stop as a bad habit - and make more of an effort to catch up with long lost friends. Hope you had a great Christmas and New Years.
