Quick Question

Riddle me this - and I know it'll be a question I keep on asking throughout my lifetime, as well as a mistake I keep on making - why does it seem to be an ingrained part of human nature to seek the approval/respect of those who least deserve it? Worse still, why do we tend to neglect those whose approval and/or respect we really should value the most?
